چکیده

We present results from a deep photometric study of the rich galaxy cluster Abell 2218 (z = 0.18) based on archival HST WFPC2 F606W images. These have been used to derive the luminosity function to extremely faint limits (MF606W ≈ −13.2 mag, μ0 ≈ 24.7mag arcsec ) over a wide field of view (1.3 h Mpc). We find the faint-end slope of the luminosity function to vary with environment within the cluster, going from α = −1.23± 0.13 within the projected central core of the cluster (100 < r < 300 h kpc) to α = −1.49± 0.06 outside this radius (300 < r < 750 h kpc). We infer that the core is ’dwarf depleted’, and further quantify this by studying the ratio of ‘dwarf’ to ‘giant’ galaxies and its dependency as a function of cluster-centric radius and local galaxy density. We find that this ratio varies strongly with both quantities, and that the dwarf galaxy population in A2218 has a more extended distribution than the giant galaxy population.

ISOCAM 15 μm Search for Distant Infrared Galaxies Lensed by Clusters

In a search for lensed infrared galaxies, ISOCAM images have been obtained toward the rich clusters Abell 2218 and Abell 2219 at 15 μm. Nine galaxies (four in Abell 2218 and five in Abell 2219) were detected with flux levels in the range 530–1100 μJy. Three of the galaxies detected in Abell 2218 have previously known redshifts; of these one is a foreground galaxy and the other two are lensed ba...

Luminosity segregation in three clusters of galaxies ( A 119 , 2443 , 2218 )

We use deep wide–field V -band imaging obtained with the Wide Field Camera at the prime focus of the Issac Newton Telescope to study the spatial and luminosity distribution of galaxies in three low redshift (0.04 < z < 0.2) clusters: Abell 119, Abell 2443 and Abell 2218. The absolute magnitude limits probed in these clusters are MV − 5 log h0.7 = −13.3, −15.4 and − 16.7mag, respectively. The ga...

Hydrogen 21-centimeter emission from a galaxy at cosmological distance.

We have detected the neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) emission line at a cosmologically significant distance [redshift (z) = 0.18] in the rich galaxy cluster Abell 2218 with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. The HI emission originates in a spiral galaxy 2.0 h65(-1) megaparsecs from the cluster core. No other significant detections have been made in the cluster, suggesting that the mechanism...

Signatures of Galaxy - Cluster Interactions : Tully - Fisher Observations at z ∼ 0 . 1

We have obtained new optical imaging and spectroscopic observations of 78 galaxies in the fields of the rich clusters Abell 1413 (z = 0.14), Abell 2218 (z = 0.18) and Abell 2670 (z = 0.08). We have detected line emission from 25 cluster galaxies plus an additional six galaxies in the foreground and background, a much lower success rate than what was found (65%) for a sample of 52 lower-richness...

We report on the mid-infrared imaging at 5, 7, 10 & 15 µm of the galaxy cluster Abell 2218 obtained with the ISOCAM instrument onboard ESA's Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), as part of an ongoing program to image gravitational arcs and arclets in distant clusters. Several cluster galaxies as well as field galaxies are detected. We discuss their mid-IR flux properties.
